The Alchemist received a mysterious package containing an earthworm and a cryptic note that reads “The road to true happiness lies beneath 50cm”. Whatever that means, there’s only one way to find out. Raise your worm to incredible lengths, and embark on a fantastic downward journey to unravel a Deep Story that lies far beneath the soil!
Earthworm Alchemy came from a brainstorming session shortly after the release of Hyper Square. Presented by Scott Chen as a worm breeding sim, the concept was chosen after a few rounds of voting. A prototype was quickly built to test out the mechanics and the arcade elements were eventually added to give it the extra twitch now commonly found in Team Signal games, creating a quirky blend of arcade and simulation. In comparison, the story went through many twists and turns, going from one outlandish setting to another (a worm planet was involved at some point), before finally settling on the current lore.
